Afternoon Delight? Try Magpies Softserve
4:00 PM
Magpies is the type of ice cream shop perfect for those who have been jonesing in this L.A. heat wave for a classic sweet treat with a not-so-typical twist.
Word of mouth brought this shop to my attention a few times in the past week or two. Until I happened to drive past the plaza, I had no idea it was literally next door from one of my favorite consignment stores in Silverlake. Since I was already in the area, I had to come try it for myself, and DAMN, have I been missing out.
Magpies offers a total of 8 different soft serve flavors handwritten out on a scroll of butcher paper hanging on the wall as you walk in. With 4/8 of the flavors being dairy free, the place is pretty vegan friendly! The flavors are paired up on the wall according to which ones you're able to swirl together.
Ordering your mix is easy - first sample it up and narrow down what flavor of soft serve you want as the base - I chose pistachio baklava. Then, your toppings. I added almond brittle and chocolate honey comb. Okay, if there is ANYTHING you're going to try here, it has to be the chocolate honey comb. (Not real honeycomb, by the way, but a crunchy, caramelized honey candy type of deal going on - so good). The combo of the honey crunch with the creamy soft serve is one you won't forget and will probably keep you just wanting to run back for more.
Also notable on the menu was their cold brew float, which I am DEFINITELY coming back to try. Their soft serve bars and pies (whole & sliced) also caught my attention, so they probably won't be seeing the last of me.
We stopped by around 5pm on a weekend just in time to beat the afternoon dessert rush. Had we waited another 15 seconds for the crosswalk, we would've been at the back of a ten person line in the small-spaced storefront.
The shop has minimalist decor with ornate tiled flooring (#ihavethisthingwithfloors, anyone?), wood paneling at the back, and a "Made in Silverlake" backdrop for all your Instagram needs. Towards the front, there's also a colorful spray-painted ice cream piece to bring a little more of a modern touch to the space.
